Equus and Amadeus writer Sir Peter Shaffer dies aged 90 after a short illness

Oscar-winning British playwright Sir Peter Shaffer has died at the age of 90.

Shaffer was visiting Ireland and passed away after a short illness with his niece Cressida at his side.

His agent confirmed his passing in a statement.

The film version of Equus in 1977 starred Richard Burton, and won Sir Peter three Oscar-nominations for best screenplay.
