The trailer for an upcoming movie about Vincent Van Gogh – made entirely from animated paintings – gives a glimpse into its expansive creative ambition.
The film, called Loving Vincent, is a cinematic first as each of the movie’s 62,450 frames is an oil painting on canvas in the style of the late genius.
That’s an incredible 12 oil paintings per second. Pretty impressive for post-impressionists, we think you’ll agree.
A star-studded cast provided the voices for the characters, including Saoirse Ronan, Aidan Turner, Chris O’Dowd and Douglas Booth.
Douglas also acted as a model for his character Armand Roulin – who sat for Van Gogh – and you can see him appear on the left about 15 seconds in.
Polish actor Robert Gularczyk voices the artist himself, who famously cut off his own ear after losing his mind.
A Kickstarter campaign helped a team of 85 painters become painter-animators for the project.
