Idris Elba earned a surprise BAFTA nomination this morning, beating out a hotly-tipped Tom Hardy.

Elba beat the Legend star for his Netflix thriller Beasts of No Nation in the Best Supporting Actor category. The Luther star will go head-to-head with fellow Brits Mark Rylance and Christian Bale.

Mark Ruffalo and Benicio Del Toro were the other nominees in the category, beating out Sylvester Stallone, who was another early favourite to miss out.

The nominations reflect the surprise success of Beasts of No Nation elsewhere, although many feel that Elba should be in the running for best lead actor for his towering performance as a fearsome warlord in the intense civil war drama.

Many commentators had speculated on the eligibility of the film itself for consideration on account of its unique release history.
